Hinckley LRFC Senior Development 5 - 4 Rugby Borough Reserves

Luke Hall22 Aug 2022 - 19:11

Hinckley LRFC Senior Development side opened up their league campaign with a win...

The Development side came from behind on 3 separate occasions as they beat an experienced Rugby Borough side.

Hinckley started on the front foot but it was Rugby Borough who went ahead after 7 minutes. A free kick wide right was diverted into his own net by Dan Winterbotham. It was to go from bad to worse for the young Hinckley side as Rugby doubled their lead just 3 minutes later. After failing to deal with another ball into the box, the ball fell to the Rugby centre forward who prodded home from 8 yards out.

Hinckley's reply was instant and good work down the right hand side resulted in a cross being pulled back to the oncoming Brogan Greenwood who finished first time after 14 minutes. Rugby extended their lead once again on 23 minutes when Hinckley lost possession on the half way line. An overlap on the outside and another cross into the far post was met by the completely unmarked Rugby Borough player just 7 yards out to increase their lead once again.

Rugby's direct approach of playing forward quickly to their dangerous front line continued to cause problems with Hinckley guilty of not retaining possession well enough. However, on 33 minutes the deficit was reduced when a Max Geary corner was met by Harry Smith who headed home from 8 yards out.

A drinks break quickly followed with the management team quick to get instructions to the players after a wide open first half hour. The game settled for the remaining 15 minutes of the half but on the stroke of half time Hinckley were caught trying to play out from the back and the Rugby centre forward nipped in to squeeze a shot past Luke Jeffrey.

Hinckley started the second half quickly following an enforced changed and within 2 minutes Josh King was played through on goal but the keeper made a good save low down to his left. Shortly after, Brogan Greenwood was set free down the left before cutting in and firing home via the aid of a small deflection. All of a sudden Franks & Humphrey's started to dictate things in the centre of the park and on 54 minutes Hinckley were level when Harry Smith beat the goalkeeper to a looping Jack Warner cross.

Hinckley were well on top and on 60 minutes they went ahead for the first time. A Max Geary corner wasn't cleared properly eventually falling to Dan Winterbotham who rifled home a half volley via the aid of a deflection from 14 yards out. Hinckley continued to apply pressure and a mazy Sam Carroll run was ended by a last ditch tackle just as he was to shoot. Max Geary had another good chance which was blocked as the Rugby Borough back line recovered from him being put through on the angle.

A much better defensive second half performance limited Rugby to set pieces but they almost drew level when Luke Jeffrey had to turn a free kick around the post. Set pieces looked to be the most likely way of Rugby getting back into the game another chance from a corner was well blocked.

The final 10 minutes of the game were far less eventful with Hinckley's young side keeping possession and seeing the game out comfortably to put their first 3 points on the board.
